A three-goal second period gave the Madison Edgewood boys hockey team a huge lead over Middleton in a non-conference game at LaBahn Arena on Wednesday night.
But then came one goal from the Cardinals, and then another, and then another.
In the end, the Crusaders had to survive a nail-biting finish to pull out a 4-3 victory.
Edgewood’s Carter Hottmann scored a hat trick in the first 23 minutes, 40 seconds of play to help his team take a 4-0 lead at 6:40 of the second period.
Hunter Stracka added a goal and an assist and Jake Schmaltz had two assists for the Crusaders.
But then came Middleton, with Alex Hovind and Bryce Shuster scoring second-period goals to trim the lead to 4-2, and with Bo Berganthal adding a goal at the 11:33 mark to make it 4-3.
But Shane Ryan, who made nine saves in the third period and 22 for the game, didn’t allow the Cardinals to produce the tying score.
Cole Garver had 23 saves for Middleton.
