Waunakee 54, Whitnall 33
An ankle injury to Hales Corners Whitnall senior guard Tyler Herro opened the door for the Waunakee boysbasketball team Wednesday night.
And the unbeaten Warriors took advantage, outscoring the Falcons 26-6 down the stretch to take a 54-33 victory in the Rick Majerus Wisconsin Basketball Yearbook Invitational at Concordia University in Mequon.
Herro, who de-committed from the University of Wisconsin to sign with the University of Kentucky in the fall,went down with an injury to his left ankle midway through the second half. He had just made a 3-point basket to spark an 8-0 run that gave Whitnall (8-2) a 27-26 lead over the Warriors (8-0).
Before the injury, Herro struggled against Waunakee’s box-and-one defense, shooting 3-for-14 from the field, going the first 16 minutes of the game without a field goal. He finished with nine points.
Waunakee senior Mitch Listau scored 12 of his 21 points in the first half, and senior Mason Steffen added 11. Whitnall was led by Josh Tilley’s 14 points.
