The Marshall High School youth brigade wasn’t shaken a bit in its WIAA state tournament debut on Thursday afternoon.

Three freshmen combined to score 74 percent of Marshall’s points as the top-seeded Cardinals defeated Wisconsin Dells, 58-47, in a Division 3 state semifinal at the Resch Center in Ashwaubenon.

Freshman Anna Lutz scored 17 points, making five of six free throws in the final 2 minutes, 26 seconds of play. Freshman Mia Morel added 16 points, shooting 3-for-4 from 3-point range, and freshman Laura Nickel added 10 points for the state fourth-ranked Cardinals (26-1) against the fourth-seeded and ninth-ranked Chiefs (25-2).

As a result, Marshall will meet either Amherst or Milwaukee St. Thomas More at about 2:45 p.m. Saturday in the Division 3 state championship game.

“I don’t even think they’re freshmen anymore,” first-year Marshall coach Alex Koeller said. “It seems like they’re seniors, and yet I get them for three more years. The way they play with such composure is unreal.”

“We’ve been playing together since fourth grade, so we know how to play (together),” said Lutz, who also led the Cardinals with eight rebounds.

The Cardinals are making their first trip to the state tournament since winning back-to-back titles in the first two WIAA tournaments ever held, in 1976 and 1977.

Marshall shot a sizzling 7-for-11 from 3-point range and 11-for-14 from the free-throw line.

The Cardinals’ performance ruined a terrific effort by Wisconsin Dells’ season scoring leader, junior Katelyn Meister. She went 10-for-10 from the line and made the Chiefs’ only two 3-point baskets of the day, finishing with 26 points. Junior center Jamie Pfeifer added 14 points and

Marshall played from out front for most of the game, extending its lead to 11 points at 38-27 on a 3-point basket by Morel with 10:31 to play. Wisconsin Dells cut the margin to five points on three occasions after that, but Marshall pulled away late behind Lutz’s free-throw shooting and a couple of crisp passes for easy baskets by Mia Morel.
