For the eleventh time in their program’s history, Middleton returns to the state playoffs after taking a 60-45 victory over Sun Prairie in the Division 1 sectional finals Saturday at Janesville Craig.
Middleton (21-5) lead by eight points at halftime thanks in part to the scoring of junior Evie Coleman, who made three three-point baskets in the first half. Junior Sitori Tanin turned on the jets in the second half to finish with 16 points.
Senior Grace Hilber of Sun Prairie (20-6) answered with 21 points of her own, but it would not be enough to rout Middleton’s balanced offense.
Middleton’s last state tournament appearance was in 2017, where they lost 49-47 to De Pere in the semifinals. The Cardinals have made it to the state championship match three times, in 1993, 2003 and 2011, but have yet to capture the elusive title.
